And here's my granddad's recipe for yummy Ripe Tomato Chutney (he never got the hang of metrics!)
- 8 lb ripe tomatoes, chopped
- 1 lb onions, peeled and chopped
- 3 oz salt
- ½ oz cloves
- ¾ tsp each cayenne pepper and ginger
- 1 pint cider vinegar
- 6 oz brown sugar
Put everything into a large pan and set it over a low heat. Cook the mixture, stirring occasionally with a wooden spoon, for about two hours, stirring more frequently as it thickens. Ladle the chutney into warm, sterilised jars to within ½ inch of their rims. Cover, seal and store in a cool, dry place.
